Where Does Cave Creek's Water Come From — and Do We Have Enough?

Cave Creek sits in the Sonoran Desert, yet most residents get their water from a river hundreds of miles away. With Colorado River shortages making headlines and additional reductions expected in 2027, here's where Cave Creek's water actually comes from, what's changing and what residents should know.

Where Does Cave Creek's Water Come From — and Do We Have Enough?

We live in the Sonoran Desert.

Yet most mornings, we turn on the faucet without thinking very much about what happens next.

Water comes out.

But where did it actually come from?

In Cave Creek, the answer may surprise newcomers.

Most of that water didn't come from beneath Cave Creek.

It came from the Colorado River.

And before reaching your kitchen faucet, it took quite a journey.

From the Colorado River to Cave Creek

According to the Town of Cave Creek, the Town's municipal water supply relies overwhelmingly on Colorado River water delivered through the Central Arizona Project, usually called CAP.

The CAP canal carries Colorado River water across central and southern Arizona.

Cave Creek withdraws raw water from the canal near Deer Valley Road.

From there, the Town has to move it uphill.

A 16-inch pipeline carries the raw water approximately 12 miles north from the CAP canal to Cave Creek's water treatment plant on Basin Road.

Four booster stations help pump the water along the way.

At the treatment plant, the water is filtered, treated and disinfected before entering a distribution system that includes storage tanks, pumps and roughly 100 miles of water mains.

So when you turn on a Cave Creek faucet, there's a good chance the water began its journey far away in the Colorado River.

How Dependent Is Cave Creek on the Colorado River?

Very.

As of the Town's May 2026 water-supply update, Cave Creek says it is approximately 95% dependent on Colorado River water delivered through CAP.

The Town currently does not use active groundwater wells to supplement the Cave Creek municipal water system.

That makes what happens on the Colorado River particularly important here.

And lately, there has been plenty to talk about.

So, Is Cave Creek Running Out of Water?

No — but that's not the same as saying there is nothing to worry about.

Headlines about the Colorado River can make it sound as though communities across Arizona are about to turn on their faucets and find nothing there.

That's not an accurate description of Cave Creek's current situation.

At the same time, long-term water supply is a serious issue that the Town is actively planning around.

The Town's Cave Creek Water 2027 information says Cave Creek expects its Colorado River deliveries through CAP to be reduced beginning in 2027.

The Town's most current planning projection is approximately a 25% reduction, while also cautioning that the eventual reduction could be higher because the situation remains uncertain.

That's significant for a community that currently depends on Colorado River water for nearly all of its municipal supply.

Cave Creek Has Been Preparing

The important part of the story is what happens next.

The Town says it has been preparing for Colorado River reductions for years through infrastructure projects, conservation measures and water-resource planning.

During the 2026 State of the Town, Cave Creek reported that it had enough water for existing Cave Creek customers for approximately the next 10 years, based on current planning assumptions.

The Town has also accumulated stored water credits. Its 2026 water FAQ says Cave Creek has banked roughly 3,000 acre-feet of unused water since 2021 for future use.

An acre-foot is approximately 326,000 gallons — roughly enough water to cover one acre of land one foot deep.

Those reserves don't make Colorado River shortages irrelevant.

They do mean the situation is more complicated than simply saying, 'Cave Creek is running out of water.'

What About Future Growth?

This is where the longer-term conversation becomes important.

Having adequate supplies for existing customers isn't exactly the same question as having enough water for every possible future development.

Cave Creek adopted an Integrated Utility Master Plan in 2024 to evaluate its water, wastewater and reclaimed-water systems and prepare for future growth, changing regulations and water-supply challenges.

The Town has said additional water resources will be necessary as it plans toward 2050.

That makes water availability not just an environmental question, but also a growth and infrastructure question.

How much water does the community have?

How much can reliably be delivered?

How much should be reserved for existing residents?

And how much additional development can the available supply support?

Those are questions desert communities increasingly have to consider together.

Cave Creek Water and Desert Hills Water Are Not the Same Thing

This is an important distinction that can easily become confusing.

The Town of Cave Creek also owns and operates the Desert Hills Water System, which serves customers in portions of unincorporated Maricopa County.

But Desert Hills has a different water-supply mix.

According to the Town, approximately 75% of Desert Hills' supply comes from Cave Creek's Colorado River water, while approximately 25% comes from three groundwater wells in the Desert Hills service area.

The Town describes that groundwater supply as decreasing.

So a discussion about 'Cave Creek water' and a discussion about 'Desert Hills water' may involve different circumstances even though the Town operates both systems.

And Then There Are Private Wells

There's another important group: residents who get their water from private wells.

Not every Cave Creek-area property is connected to the Town's municipal water system.

Private wells depend on groundwater beneath the area rather than directly receiving CAP water through the Town's system.

That means the water situation for a private-well owner can be very different from the situation for someone connected to Cave Creek municipal water.

Groundwater levels, well depth, nearby pumping and local geology all matter.

If you're considering buying a property in the Cave Creek area, don't assume the presence of a faucet means the water source is the same as the house down the road.

Ask where the property's water comes from.

The Town recommends contacting its Utility Department if you're uncertain whether a residence is connected to the municipal system.

Why Can't Cave Creek Just Drill More Wells?

It's an understandable question.

We're standing on land. Surely there's groundwater beneath us.

But groundwater isn't automatically a dependable long-term municipal supply.

The Town says previous assessments determined that its groundwater wells could not be relied upon as a reliable long-term source for the Cave Creek system.

Since purchasing the water system in 2007, the Town has increasingly relied on renewable surface-water supplies from CAP rather than those wells.

That decision also illustrates something important about desert water management.

Water underground isn't an unlimited underground lake.

If groundwater is removed faster than an aquifer is replenished, water levels decline.

Conservation Still Matters

It's easy to hear that the Town has planned supplies and conclude that individual conservation doesn't matter.

It does.

Every gallon that doesn't have to be delivered, treated and pumped uphill is a gallon that remains available for another use.

Outdoor irrigation is particularly important in desert communities because landscaping can consume substantial amounts of water.

Native and desert-adapted landscaping can dramatically reduce that demand while still creating an attractive yard that actually looks like it belongs in Cave Creek.

Conservation isn't necessarily about giving up desert living.

Often, it's about learning to live more appropriately in the desert.

The Water Story Is Still Being Written

Perhaps the most important thing residents should understand is that Cave Creek's water situation isn't static.

Colorado River management is changing.

CAP allocations may change.

Infrastructure is being improved.

Additional water sources are being investigated.

Conservation measures continue to evolve.

And decisions about future growth will interact with all of those things.

So numbers quoted today should always be understood as a snapshot rather than a permanent guarantee.

For current water-supply decisions and official updates, residents should rely on the Town of Cave Creek and the agencies responsible for managing Arizona's water rather than social-media speculation.

The Next Time You Turn on the Faucet

It's worth thinking about the journey for just a moment.

That glass of water may have traveled from the Colorado River, through the Central Arizona Project canal, into Cave Creek's intake, through a 12-mile pipeline and four booster stations, into the treatment plant and finally through miles of distribution pipes before reaching your house.

Delivering water to a community in the Sonoran Desert is anything but simple.

Cave Creek isn't facing an immediate dry faucet.

But neither can a desert community take its water supply for granted.

Understanding where our water comes from may be the first step toward understanding why protecting it matters.
